Frequently asked questions
Although the terms are often used interchangeably, there are subtle but important differences between modern and contemporary kitchen design.
Contemporary kitchens tend to favour minimalist styling, flat slab doors and understated detailing. Modern kitchens, by contrast, place greater emphasis on texture, materiality and carefully considered detailing to create spaces that feel both stylish and welcoming.
At MLK, we believe modern kitchens are defined by thoughtful composition rather than individual features. Balancing painted cabinetry with natural wood, introducing texture through stone and using feature shelving or oak surrounds to break up long runs of cabinetry creates visual interest while maintaining a refined aesthetic. It's these subtle design decisions that give a modern kitchen its warmth, depth and enduring appeal.
In most homes, the answer is yes. Full-height cabinetry is one of the simplest ways to make a kitchen feel more considered, more spacious and better organised.
From a design perspective, extending cabinetry to the ceiling creates stronger vertical proportions, naturally drawing the eye upwards and giving the kitchen a seamless, furniture-like appearance. It also allows features such as integrated ovens, refrigeration and pantry storage to sit comfortably within a continuous run of cabinetry, creating a cleaner overall aesthetic.
Modern kitchens favour full-height cabinetry because it combines exceptional functionality with a clean, uninterrupted design. The practical benefits are just as significant. Full-height cabinets maximise storage by making use of every available centimetre, providing space for less frequently used items while eliminating the dust-collecting gap often left above standard cabinets. The result is a kitchen that feels both more refined and more functional.
Choosing a kitchen colour is about much more than following current trends. Experienced designers begin by understanding the home itself, considering factors such as natural light, room orientation, ceiling height, flooring and adjoining living spaces before recommending a colour palette.
Colour should never be viewed in isolation. Crisp whites, warm taupe’s, soft browns and layered neutrals create a bright, timeless aesthetic, while deeper shades such as forest green, charcoal and navy introduce depth and definition. The most successful modern kitchens combine these colours with complementary materials such as natural oak, stone surfaces and carefully selected finishes, creating warmth, texture and visual balance.
Rather than asking which colour is most popular, it's more important to choose a palette that complements your home, reflects your lifestyle and creates the atmosphere you want to live in every day.
A high-end kitchen isn't defined by expensive appliances or premium worktops alone. It's the combination of carefully considered design decisions that creates a space that feels refined, balanced and effortlessly cohesive.
One of the principles our experienced designers use is visual balance. Long runs of cabinetry are often broken up with natural oak shelving, or feature surrounds to introduce warmth and texture without overwhelming the space. Full-height splashbacks, continuous worktop materials and carefully considered symmetry all help create a seamless, uninterrupted aesthetic that immediately feels more considered.
Perhaps most importantly, restraint plays a role. Rather than introducing lots of competing colours, materials or decorative features, the most successful modern kitchens rely on a limited palette of complementary materials, repeated consistently throughout the design. This creates a kitchen that feels calm, sophisticated and beautifully resolved.
The best storage solutions are the ones you hardly notice. A well-designed modern kitchen should feel calm, organised and easy to use because storage has been considered from the very beginning of the design process.
Rather than simply adding more cabinets, our designers focus on making every centimetre work harder. Extra-tall cabinetry maximises vertical space, deep pan drawers provide easier access than traditional cupboards, while hidden breakfast stations, integrated bins and internal drawer organisation keep everyday essentials close to hand without adding visual clutter. Thoughtfully designed concealed storage can also be integrated into end panels, full-height cabinetry and banquet seating, transforming otherwise unused spaces into practical everyday storage without compromising the clean, uncluttered aesthetic of a modern kitchen.
Modern kitchens are designed to balance storage with simplicity. By concealing appliances, reducing unnecessary items on the worktop and creating a place for everything, the kitchen feels more spacious, functions more efficiently and remains enjoyable to live with every day.
